Nuraghe Cuccurada

Mogoro (OR)

At the top of the Sa Struvina plateau, the nuraghe Cuccurada preserves traces of transformations over time, from prehistory to the Middle Ages.

FIVE THOUSAND YEARS ON THE PLATEAU

It stands in central-southern Sardinia, on the basaltic plateau of Sa Struvina in the territory of Mogoro. From the plateau, the inhabitants of the nuraghe had wide visual control of the territory.

The plateau was frequented for over 5,000 years. The first traces date to 4000–3300 BC, but the Cuccurada settlement developed in several construction phases over the centuries, eventually including a nuraghe, a village and a wall.

The long history of Cuccurada passed through transformations, destructions and new frequentations.

Today parts of the village, the complex nuraghe, the cyclopean wall and the first corridor nuraghe are preserved at the site.

THE SITE

At Cuccurada, the oldest structures do not disappear but are incorporated, reused or covered. From the cyclopean wall to the complex nuraghe, and to stone quarrying in the contemporary age. The transformations of the site, its excavations and finds allow us to reconstruct a story spanning millennia.

THE TERRITORY

The site stands on the basaltic plateau of Sa Struvina, in the territory of Mogoro, in a position that allowed wide visual control of the territory. The Rio Mogoro valley was a natural route towards the interior.
